New QD-OLED Gaming Monitors from Philips and AOC Set to Redefine Visuals
The next generation of QD-OLED panels is here, directly tackling the prevalent issue of font fringing in OLED displays. As concerns over screen burn-in diminish and costs become more accessible, the clarity of text remains a key differentiator where IPS technology historically held an advantage. Philips and its partner AOC are set to release their 5th-generation QD-OLED gaming monitors in the third quarter of this year, and initial previews highlight their impressive capabilities.
During a recent media showcase, both companies unveiled their latest innovations, offering attendees a firsthand look at their cutting-edge display technologies. The AOC AGP346UCSD, a 34-inch WQHD panel, boasts a 360 Hz refresh rate and supports HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1. It also includes a 15W USB Type-C port, with plans for higher wattage ports in future models. Meanwhile, the Philips Evnia 34M2C8600P, another 34-inch offering, features HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, but compensates with a more robust 65W USB Type-C port, a sleek white design, and dynamic Ambiglow RGB lighting that synchronizes with on-screen content.
Both monitors share the advanced 5th-generation QD-OLED screen technology, which incorporates a V-RGB pixel substructure. This innovation delivers superior HDR performance (HDR 500 TB), significantly reduces font fringing, and achieves higher overall brightness, peaking at 1300 nits with a typical full-screen brightness of 300 nits. Expected to hit the market between July and September, the AOC model is priced around €999 (approximately $1,176 USD), targeting high-end gaming enthusiasts, while the Philips variant, at €899 (around $1,050 USD), aims for a broader, more casual gaming audience. The Philips model’s Ambilight system, which integrates with smart home lighting, creates a more immersive gaming environment, allowing users to customize their room's ambiance through its new Ambiscape ecosystem, which supports Matter-compatible devices and Philips’ AI lighting system. This offers a compelling alternative for those prioritizing aesthetics and immersive features over the highest refresh rates, though US availability is yet to be confirmed.
