JER Café: A Hub of Modern Culture in Almaty

In a significant architectural endeavor, the NAAW architectural firm was commissioned to conceptualize and execute the interior design for the JER café, a key component of the Tselinny Center of Contemporary Art in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This project is part of a larger initiative to rejuvenate the city's Soviet-era Tselinny cinema, transforming it into a vibrant hub for modern culture under the guidance of Asif Khan Studio.
The JER café, spanning 150 square meters and completed in 2025, showcases a design philosophy centered on clean lines and a sophisticated material palette. The interior predominantly features concrete, providing a robust and contemporary foundation, complemented by the warmth of wood elements and the transparency of glass. These materials are artfully combined to craft a minimalist yet inviting environment, fostering a sense of calm and openness for patrons. The strategic use of lighting further enhances the serene ambiance, highlighting architectural details and creating distinct zones within the space.
The JER café stands as a testament to thoughtful architectural conversion, breathing new life into a historical structure while embracing modern design principles. It not only serves as a welcoming spot for coffee enthusiasts but also integrates seamlessly into the broader vision of the Tselinny Center, enhancing Almaty’s contemporary cultural landscape. This project exemplifies how architecture can bridge the past and present, creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that enrich community life and foster artistic engagement. The seamless integration of modern design within a historic shell offers a harmonious blend that encourages interaction and appreciation for both art and architecture.
